Post Adoption
St Cuthberts Care, which was previously known as the Hexham and Newcastle Diocesan Rescue Society and then Catholic Care North East, was an Approved Adoption Society from 1946 to 1996.
During this time many babies and young children were given up for adoption and placed with Catholic families throughout the North East.
St Cuthberts Care is now registered as an Adoption Support Agency and as such offers a range of Post Adoption support and intermediary services to those people involved in adoption.
The two main areas of the service are:
- Providing support and advice to Adopted People over the age of 18 years
- Providing support and advice to Birth Relatives of adopted people over the age of 18 years

As a registered Adoption Support Agency we are able to provide these services to anyone affected by adoption. However, due to limited resources our priority will be to those where the adoption was arranged through this agency.
Our qualified and experienced staff have knowledge about other agencies, tracing and legislation and will do their best to advise anyone with a post adoption query.

Access to In Care Records Service
St Cuthberts Care, which was previously known as the Hexham and Newcastle Diocesan Rescue Society and Catholic Care North East, has been involved in the care of children and young people since 1946.
Over the years the agency has managed a number of children’s homes and institutions for which we still have registers and/or records. These are listed below:
- St Vincent’s, Newcastle, from 1894 onwards
- St Peter’s, Gainford, from 1900 onwards
- St Mary’s, Tudhoe, from 1800 onwards
- St Joseph’s, Darlington, from 1886 onwards
- Nazareth House, Newcastle
- Bisley Drive Children’s Home, South Shields
- St Aidan’s, Willington Quay
- Seton House Newcastle
- Auton House Newcastle
If you were in care yourself in one of these homes, or your relative was in care and you are seeking to access these records, then we will do our best to help you.
The two main areas are:
- A service for people who have been in care in one of our homes and are seeking to access their own records
- A service for birth relatives of people who have been in care in one of our homes and who are seeking access to their relative’s records
