St. Catherines Nursing Home

St Catherine's is a Catholic home offering residential and nursing care to older people. We believe that older people living in care should continue to live as full and active a life as possible, maintaining independence and choice in all they do. Personal care and support is delivered with dignity and respect for the individual in a safe, comfortable environment.

Built in quiet and attractive gardens, St Catherine's is conveniently situated on the West Road in Newcastle upon Tyne. The location offers easy access from the A1, which is less than a mile away and also from the centre of Newcastle and all areas of Tyne & Wear.

St Catherine's is truly a unique development; it is the first joint partnership between St Cuthberts Care and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle.

We have our own chapel where Mass and services are celebrated by the home's appointed Chaplain and other visiting priests. Many residents gain pleasure from the peaceful ambience of the chapel and enjoy its tranquil atmosphere; it is open all day to residents, family, friends and staff, and is valued for private prayer and contemplation.

Facilities

Each of the home's 45 bedrooms is fully furnished to a high standard for single occupancy. Six of the bedrooms have connecting doors to allow couples to share space if required.

Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms and to bring small items of furniture and decoration to foster an individual 'home from home' feeling. All of the light and airy rooms offer pleasing views, either of the green and leafy gardens or the inner courtyard.

All rooms have a television point and come with central heating which can be controlled individually and they also have the added convenience of en-suite facilities. Residents can request to have a telephone installed. In addition there are specialist bathing facilities, including hoists and bath chairs, for those residents with reduced mobility.

All rooms are fitted with a reassuring nurse call facility that allow residents and staff to summon help in an emergency.

Activities

As well as being encouraged to continue with hobbies and pastimes, residents are offered a full activity programme to suit all needs and interests, including:

• Board games and quizzes
• Bingo
• Craftwork
• Armchair exercises
• Music nights
• Trips out etc. to the theatre, gardens and other attractions.

Entertainers are also invited in to perform to residents or to lead sing-a-long sessions.

Staff

St Catherine's is run by a Manager and a team of qualified Nurses and additional Auxiliary Care staff. Each one of our staff aims to develop close and supportive relationships with all the people important in every resident's life. They actively encourage discussion and feedback from residents, relatives and other professionals via group meetings. To maintain high standards staff reviews, assessing levels of competency, are held annually and both the nursing and care staff are actively encouraged to pursue their professional development.
