Leaving Care Training Accommodation

Our continuing work with young people has informed us of the need for support in the leaving care environment. Our expertise, awareness and understanding of the challenges facing teenagers from a care background, as well as the lack of provision in the North East, has prompted the design of a range of support services for young people at this vulnerable stage of their lives.

Streets Ahead is a trainer house, suitable for any young person leaving care, aged between 16 and 18, who is keen to gain a level of independence, develop their life skills and improve their overall economic wellbeing. The environment is one in which they can receive a level of guidance, develop their own boundaries, improve socialisation and citizenship skills in readiness for moving on to a permanent tenancy.

The Streets Ahead service is situated at The Lodge - a three bedroom detached property located at the St Vincent's site in the outer west of Newcastle. The resource is available to commissioners across the North East and has ready access to local amenities - shops, colleges, Metro Centre, bus routes, library, swimming baths etc. It includes a range of facilities and planned services to equip referred teenagers with the life skills to successfully maintain a home.

The length of stay varies according to need but could be from a minimum of six months to a maximum of one year.

One member of staff provides planned and unplanned contact during a 24-hour period while there is also accessible support from neighbouring St Cuthberts Care services located on the same site.

Referrals are welcome from social workers, Youth Offending Team and other professionals.
